19/10/04: Northern Franchise Update

The Strategic Rail Authority (SRA) and the five affected Passenger Transport Executives have signed a franchise agreement with Serco-NedRailways to operate the new Northern Rail franchise.

The Peak District has a long & proud railway heritage, indeed many towns owe their existence to the railway companies. The landscape of the Peak posed some great challenges to the railway builders and produced some of the most unusual and spectacular railways in the country.


The early ones sprang from the Canal Age, the Peak Forest Tramway was opened in the 1790s and was horse powered at first. These early lines were designed to carry heavy goods & minerals, not people.

Local Services

Northern Rail

Passenger railways came later, with the Midland Railway line through the Peak begun in 1848. A ride on the railway in those early days was a thrilling experience to people unused to speed and dramatic scenery.
